Fed up Social Work Students Call for the End of Unpaid Internships

“Hundreds of social work students from seven universities across New York City, Long Island, and New Jersey will gather to demand pay equity on Sunday, April 14, in Washington Square Park.

Student organizer, Alexandra Armanino and organizer for Payment for Placements (P4P) National and the New York and New Jersey Coalition say social work students are valuable contributors to community agencies and individuals, yet the failure to pay them for their work causes them financial hardship, excessive student debt and mental health distress.

‘If students, alumni, and the community don’t speak up, (master in social work) students will continue being exploited and burnt out before even starting their careers,’ said Lauren Korczakowski, a Rutgers MSW alumna. ‘I’ve heard from classmates and experienced first-hand various unethical situations. This is hypocritical to social work values.’”
